Training providers switch tactics

It appears the latest pitch in the push to get you to buy $99-worth of online training for driver supervisors is a letter. Double R Trucking in Pierce is among the many members who received one. The letter tells you that your driver supervisors must receive two hours of training to recognize signs of drug use and alcohol misuse. You can train online for $99. But hurry! The vendors “are authorized” to increase the price at any time to $149. The offer of an in-person training seminar is no longer part of the pitch. Because the letter comes from an address in Delaware, the Nebraska attorney general would not have jurisdiction. We are investigating whether a report to the Federal Trade Commission would be worthwhile. We agree this vendor’s approach is deceptive, and so does the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration which has a notice posted on its website.

The training is required unless you are a one-person, owner-operator trucking company. You can rent a video from us for $25 plus tax and shipping. The federal government does not have a “compliance data base” for supervisor training. In the event of a safety audit, safety investigators would ask to see documentation of your supervisor training. You keep the record, not the vendor or the government.
